“People, People don’t go out of business”

People, People don’t go out of business – Age old wisdom from modern management guru Michael Scott, Manager at the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin Inc.

I find this quote above quote quite comforting – People don’t go out of business – people run businesses, and as these things go, some work, some fail – in good economic times and in bad.

While there is no backing away from the current economic situation , It’s important not to get drawn into a negative mind set lest it becoming self fulfilling.

Now Michael also states:

“There are four kinds of business: Tourism, food service, railroads, and sales….Oh  and hospitals-slash-manufacturing. And air travel.”

Up there with Michael Porter no doubt!

Ireland – Building The Smart Economy

An Taoiseach Brian Cowen made a speech today (the 18th of December 2008) at Dublin castle outlining a five year plan developed in conjunction with IDA IRELAND to create an innovative environment in Ireland for business to thrive.

The plan is to make Ireland the most attractive country in the world to setup a business.

The minister promised that;

  • Ireland will have the best tax regime.
  • Ireland will have the best business supports.
  • Ireland will have the best infrastructural supports.
  • Ireland will have state agencies and institutions which are aligned to create competitive advantage for their clients in innovation enterprise.
  • Ireland will have lots of other great benefits for international business!

It’s great to see the government taking such a strong lead in bringing in measures to bolster our economy and attract international enterprises to Ireland, but there wasn’t as much information on the solid practical steps the government would use to bring this about.

Below I’ve included the full text of the Taoiseach’s speech, the full and practical details of which will hopefully become clearer in the next few days.
